Alright all? Haven't been on in ages so I thought I'll re introduce myself.
Name's Elwin, I'm Dutch but live with wife and 2 kids in East Linton (Scottish east coast).
Got me a 1968 1500 beetle now, which was our family car, but we recently bought a proper boring Astra.
So the beetle's my toy now. Was at first thinking to slam it and go the Hot Rod way, but all of a sudden thought, wait a minute I wanted a Baja a while back.
So, Dillema. Slam or Raise?.... no idea

No dilemma to be honest. Has to be a baja. Less metal to rust, no worries about going over speed humps, I'm sure you get some snow up that way so you wouldn't wanna be trying to snowplough through that! Shocked
Welcome to the club! thumb

Yeah after looking at the videos on the home page, my wife and 3yr old son told me to build a Baja. So I guess I'll just have to go with it then Very Happy

I guess I got distracted by my brother going on about slamming the beetle and looking at too many Volkrods.

So decided to go the other way now and raise it. But is building a baja just bigger tyres, raising the suspension and (optional) put on a baja kit? Or does it need some more strengthening?

It all depends on what you want to use it for. Generally speaking a good solid bug is very capable of handling abuse. Most off road stuff is pretty much steady going, the vids from the front, (there are more in various show scene threads) are at santa pod where we had a course dug for us. This is now a permanent feature but in a different area and set out differently. The course is more technical and the obstacles closer together so less jumping is likely. That's likely to be the hardest any of us will ever use our cars!
Green laning is actually on public byways so they are by definition accessible and passable however some are harder going than others, particularly in the mud and wet!
A baja kit is recommended for this kind of use as the front and rear of a stock beetle are quite likely to get damaged or stuck!
Adding an adjustable beam will give you extra clearance at the front and generally raising the rear can be done in a day with no huge difficulty. Depending on your skills a baja kit should be pretty straightforward to fit, you'll just need some accurate measuring for the front nosecone or the bonnet will not line up.....few are actually a good fit anyway. Sad The wings use the stock beetle bolt holes so no great hardship there and the rear cowl is a matter of personal preference, some like it some don't.
Be patient if you want cheaper tyres, they come up here and on ebay fairly often there's a wheel and tyre thread so you can see what some of us are running.
