Does it use a Beetle floorpan?

Then it will need to pass every test you can imagine, they basically treat you as a new car manufacturer!

with a floorpan you 'may' get away with it... that said the dvla/vosa are about to go hard on what they now call 'illegal builds' and 'stolen identity' cars.

without the floorpan its sva/iva for sure.

there is a document being circulated to mot stations that encourages testers to make bigger steps towards validating 'mot'd' kit cars, it says in no uncertain terms that if they are 'unsure' of an identity the vehicle MUST be refered to VOSA (where it will be iva tested!). A recent chat with a local VOSA tester confirmed this.

AFAIK there is not a single rail kit that has type approval, and even if there was you as a home builder could not make use of that as type approval as its only available to low volume builders and manufactures (this is because each build must be facsimile of the submitted build)...

Sorry dude, it sounds like you are screwed. You'll probably have to limit your playing to private land unless you can get it through an IVA. Have a look on some kit car forums to see what is involved.

it should not be a problem getting it passed a biva/iva. get yourself onto the ACE website and download the test manual. i think BillyBob tested a few of his and they passed without to many problems.
It will end up on a Q plate reg.
I looked into it when i was planing my rail and it didn't look to be much of a problem, my rail is on hold till next year due to much work on.

SVA was never a big problem as the the requirements were fairly reasonable on the whole with most being common sense... IVA though is a bit tougher as they are starting to tie it to the new vosa build rules regarding parts sourcing (something that was largely ignored with sva) and the new type approval rules as set down under the latest EEC white paper.

done a lot of work looking into this over the last 2 months ready for my space frame bajas and as long as you build knowing your going to go though IVA i think it should be ok. I guess what vosa are saying if you build a vehicle right, to the rules it should be safe and road legal and it will pass, cut corners, bodge or just ignore both your own and public safety and you will have a battle on your hands.

As its been said, its an automatic 'Q' plate on any build that can't qualify as new build. The old points system has been changed a little but i have confirmed as it was posted on here you are allowed ONE rebuilt MAJOR component only and the rest of the parts must be invoiced and new!

IVA has also had its first 'update' and the rules on 'motorsport' exemption tightened... in the past just claiming the vehicle was for motorsport is not going to stand, you need to prove the build is to a minimum standard for the sport... eg the build has to be up to MSA/FIA to get anywhere.

This all said there are a few companies that are ahead of the game and have worked with the kit car clubs to manufacture/supply parts that are to IVA spec off the shelf... using these bits will put up your build cost but will save you on stupid and expensive retest fee's.

ACE is a good starting point but last time looked ACE's manual was out of date, the .gov website has the latest version and it has the updates (bit of hunt to find though!)

Jenna.
